Anne Powell Leathers, age 95, of Durham passed away April 22, 2015. Born in Durham, Anne was the daughter of the late Rufus Heflin Powell, Jr. aneelizabeth Bailey Reade Powell. She was also preceded ineeath by her husband of 59 years, William Alsey Leathers, and two brothers, Rufus H. Powell, III (Matibelle) and Joe Reade Powell (Jenny). She is survived by a brother, Thomas Clay Powell (Jean) of Florida. Anne is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Leathers Guajardo (Cesar) of Bahama, NC and Anne Leathers Ortosky of Bethel, NC and a son, William Buxtoneeathers, of Durham, her other survivors include 6 grandchildreneeric, Miguel, Rodney Guajardo, Jamie Darby, Matt Ortosky and Sarah Leathers). She was also blessed to have 10 great grandchildreneevan, Nicolas, Mitchell and Jenna Darby, Maddie and Jacob Ortosky, Mia and Marisa Guajardo, Eli and Lia Guajardo). Anne graduated from Durham High School in 1938 after which she attended Greensboro College. In 1941 she married her childhood sweetheart. For many years she was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, singing in the choir there. In 1943, after her husband returned from World War II, she traneerred her membership to the First Presbyterian Church. Activities there, besides her choir membership, included voluneer office work, heading up ???Service Day??? for many years, which provided for the making of Habitat for Humanity quilts, knitting prayer shawls and making lap robes and baby quilts. In 1992 she was chosen First Presbyterian Church???s Woman of the Year. Because of her enjoyment of people, she became a member of the Durham Civinette Club (a past president) and later joined the Durham/Orange County Home Economic???s Club. She loved travelling, fishing, golf and always looked forward to getting good cards at the bridge table. During her later years she divided her time living with her Bahama daughter and her daughter in the mountains of Bethel where she made many friends at the Senior Center in Sugar Grove. She was a resident of Croasdaile Village at the time of her death. Anneenjoyed her life thoroughly and spent her time wisely. She could always be found working on one (or more!) crafts ??? knitting, crocheting, quilting, gourd painting, making pottery or pressed flower bookmarks and cards, or simply playing the piano. To celebrate her life, a memorial service will be held 11 AM Saturday, May 2, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church after which a reception will be held.
