Billie Warren Southerland

Billie Warren Southerland, 87, of 907 Urban Avenue died Monday morning at Durham Regional Hospital. A Durham native, she was born January 18, 1918, to the late Hubert T. and Hassie Sims Warren. Billie lived in the Trinity Park area for 50 years and was educated in the Durham City Schools. She graduated from Durham High in 1936. Billie was known for her outstanding beauty and character and was elected the 1936 Durham High School May queen. In 1941, she married Samuel Carl S.C. Southerland, who died in 1972. In addition to being a wonderful wife to S.C. for 32 years and mother of two children, Warren and Lee, Billie worked as an executive secretary at Home Security Life Insurance Company for 24 years until her retirement in 1983. During retirement, Billie stayed active playing ineeveral bridge groups, voluneering for the Sara Barker Circle of the Kings Daughters Home; and creating beautiful needlepoint work. She was an active member of Croasdaile Country Club. Billie was a long time member of Trinity Uneed Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of the Bible Babes study group. Surviving are one son, Carl Warren Southerland and daughter-in-law, Kathy, of Monee, GA; a daughter, Frances Lee Southerland Berlow, and son-in-law, Bruce Berlow, M.D., of Mystic, CT; two granddaughters, Jenneer Southerland Rindt of Altanta, GA; and Nicole Southerland of Columbia, SC; and a grandson, Clifford Warreneerlow of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Abigail aneella Rindt of Atlanta, GA. Billie was preceded ineeath by her sister, Hassie Lee Warren McGhee. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 2, from Trinity Uneed Methodist Church. The Reverends Duke Lackey and Susan White will preside. Friends may visit from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Trinity Uneed Methodist Church, 215 N. Church Street, Durham, NC 27701. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionee care of Dr. Michael Shipley and Dr. Arthur Whitehurst at the end of life. Arrangements for the Southerland family are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
