Carroll Dale Briscoe, Col. USAF Retired, passed away oneebruary 15, 2009 at The Arbor at Galloway Ridge ineearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC. Colonel Briscoe was born oneeb. 9, 1921 near Tipton, OK, son of Jefferson C. Briscoe and Bertha Gore Briscoe. Colonel Briscoe graduated from Tipton, OK High School in 1938 and attended the Uneersity of Oklahoma, before entering the Army Air Corps Flying Cadet program in August 1941. He completed advanced flight training as a Second Lieutenant in March 1942. His wartime service included a tour, 1942-43, as Airplane Commander and Flight Commander of a B-17 Group, stationed at Thurleigh Air Base near Bedford, England, conducting combat operations over occupied France and Germany. For this service, he was awarded the Eighth Air Force Certificate of Valor, the Distinguished Flying Cross, on two occasions the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Unit Citation. Ineecember 1944, he returned to England to join the First Scouting Force, flying P-51 Mustangs. Following WWII, Colonel Briscoe had assignments at numbered Air Force Headquarters and at Headquarters USAF, as well as the Pentagon, where he served three years as Executive Secretary of the Air staff Board. He also earned a degree with the Uneersity of Maryland. Colonel Briscoe retired from the Air Force in 1970, as a Colonel and a Command Pilot, and began a career with USAA, retiring as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the USAA Life Insurance Company in 1986. Colonel Briscoe served on the boards of neerous civic groups and foundations including: The Air Force Village Foundation, Air Force Village II, Executive Service Corps of San Antonio, and as President of the 306th Bombardment Group "First Over Germany" Memorial Association. Col. Briscoe was preceded ineeath by his wife of 66 years, Beti Bretherton Briscoe. He is survived by two daughters, Jun Martz and son-in-law, Uzal Martz, of Fearrington Village, NC, and Beti Ann Sickert and son-in-law, Paulo Sickert, of Chapel Ridge, NC; four grandchildren, Cameron Martz, Lisa Sickert Ward, Eric Martz, Jenneer Sickert Schoenherr; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in the Auditorium of Galloway Ridge at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009, with Rev. Hannah McManus and Rev. Dr. Steve McElroy presiding. Interment will be at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
