Fanee "Odelle" Slaughter

Oxford: Fanee ???Odelle??? Slaughter passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the age of 98. Her final thoughts were for her Lord to take her to Heaven and He did. She was born March 13, 1917 to the late S.T. aneethel Slaughter of Person County. Uponeer marriage in 1938 to her beloved late husband, William Albert Slaughter, Mrs. Slaughter moved to Granville County. Her husband, Albert died in March 1965, leaving her to care for three children alone. And so, her journey beganeecoming a strong, determined and independent woman..with a life well lived. Mrs. Slaughter was originally employed at the parachute plant in Roxboro and later began a successful and fulfilling career at Murdock Center School for the Blind for over 20 years. She had great love and compassion for the residents at the School for the Blind and considered her work part of her service for her Lord. She retired from Murdock in 1977. Mrs. Slaughter was a self-taught, gifted pianist and organist. Over the years, she taught many members of her family how to play piano, watching them grow in their musical endeavors. She also, provided instruction to the multitude of friends and children at Berea High School and Oak Hill High School, as well as private piano lessons. Music was her passion in life. Mrs. Slaughter shared her talent not only as pianist and organist of her church, but was a familiar and welcomed presence at the retirement and nursing facilities across the county. She enjoyed entertaining and amusing ???the older people??? well into her neeties. Mt. Zion Baptist Church, especially her choir was one of Mrs. Slaughter???s great loves. She served as Choir Director for many years, as well as pianist and organist. Across the decades, she was dedicated to the Vacation Bible School and youth organizations, recognizing that childreneere the future of the church. She was active in many other aspects of the church including the senior citizens group and Relay for Life. In 2001, she was presented the award for Voluneer of the Year for Church and Community Ministries by the Flat River Baptist Association. Prior to her death, Mrs. Slaughter was the oldest member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Preceded ineeath by eight brothers and one sister, she is survived by one sister, Hazel S. Long of Roxboro. She was a loving and devoted mother to three Children, Linda S. Coley, William Albert ???Al??? Slaughter, III (Elaine) and Larry Silvanus Slaughter, all of Oxford. She was blessed with three grandchildren, Melissa C. Enlowe (Mike) of Raleigh, NC, Lori S. Nichols (Chris) of Matthews, NC, Todd Slaughter of Oxford, one step-granddaughter, Shannon Cottrell (Lance) of Oxford, three great-grandsons, Perry, Mason and Carson Enlowe , all of Raleigh, NC and one step-great granddaughter, Skylar Cottrell of Oxford, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. On Monday, June 15, 2015, the family will receive friend at Gentry, neell and Vaughan Funeral Home from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Linda S. Coley. Funeral services and burial for Mrs. Slaughter will be held Tuesday afternoon, June 16 and 3:00 PM at Mt. Zion Baptist Church ineerea by Reverend Keith William. Flowers are welcomed or memorial contributions may be made to any of the following church organizations at Mt. Zion Baptist Church: Choir Fund, Youth Fund or William Albert Slaughter and Odell Slaughter Fund, 1171 Hwy. 158 W, Oxford, NC 27565. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brantwood Nursing facility in Oxford for the loving care provided to their mother and grandmother. The family is being assisted by Gentry-neell & Vaughan Funeral Home.
