Leonard "Curtis" Pergerson

Oneebruary 6, 2018, Leonard Curtis Pergerson Sr. passed from this life into the loving arms of his heavenly Father. Curtis grew up on a farm working with his parents, Glady and Cordie Pergerson. It was on this farm and working at Short Sugars that he developed a wonderful work ethic that would benefit him in the years to come. He graduated from Bethany High School, then attended East Carolina Uneersity where he earned his business degree in three years. After graduating, Curtis maneed Campbell Uneersity???s bookstore where he met a student, Brenda Durham, who later became the love of his life. In 1963, Curtis began his career managing The Book Exchange. For 45 years, he faithfully worked long hours to grow the store into Durham???s iconic bookstore. He loved his work and could always point a customer to the exact place in the store where they could find their desired books. Upon his retirement, he and Brenda enjoyed ten wonderful years together along with family and friends. Those years brought neerous physical challenges but he persevered with great tenacity, a desire to live life to the fullest and neer losing his sense of humor. During this time, he was unable to enjoy his favorite pastimes of fishing and golf. He loved his Lord, his family, his church, and music. Curtis was the proud father of his children, Curt (Jaci), Chris (Sandra), and Courtney (Johnny Luther) and he loved being Papaw to his grandchildren: Hannah (Joey Schwartz), Gabriel, Benjamin, Bryce and Miriam. He was a wonderful provider for his family, desiring very little for himself. During his last months, of being homebound, he was lovingly cared for by three special angels: Amy, Heather and Jolene who brought him much joy and comfort. A memorial celebration will be held at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home on Thursday, February 15th. Visitation will be at 1:00 and the service at 2:00.
