Mary Hawkins Mccarthy

Mary H. McCarthy, age 91, died peacefully in Durham, North Carolina on May 21, 2021, after a long illness. Mary was the daughter of the late Arch and Jessie Oake of Belmont, Massachusetts. She was a beloved wife and was preceded in death by both Paul J Pitts, her husband of 36 years, and John J. (Jack) McCarthy, her husband of 24 years.
A loving and devoted mother, Mary is survived by Robert P. Pitts and wife Meredith of Clackamas, Oregon, Donna L. Ray and husband Stephen of North Port, Florida, Dianne M. Boucher and husband Emile of Durham, North Carolina, and Linda J. Walters and husband Glenn, also of Durham. She leaves behind fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who loved her dearly. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Sr. Patricia McCarthy, O.C.D., Elizabeth Dally, John McCarthy, Suzanne Caso and the (late) James McCarthy.
Mary grew up in Belmont, graduating from BHS in 1947. In high school, Mary was a natural athlete and enjoyed playing field hockey, basketball, and softball. Following high school, she attended the McLean Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1950. She married Paul in 1951 and together they raised four children. Mary was a bowler, she loved to garden, and was a life-long sports fan, following the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics.
After a lifetime career as an operating room nurse at Mount Auburn Hospital, Mary retired in 1994. She married Jack that same year and they moved to Bradenton, Florida. Mary became an avid golfer, notching two holes-in-one over several years. In addition to her time on the links, she enjoyed retirement by traveling, visiting the beach, attending band concerts, and spending time with family.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 24th at 10 AM at the Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. There are no visiting hours and interment will be private. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777, or to a charity of your choice.
