Paul Joseph McCarthy, 77, formerly of Green Bay, WI, and most currently of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC, died peacefully at his home on August 13, 2014, after a short but tenacious battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. Paul was born to Berenee (Gaudet) and Dennis McCarthy on June 10, 1937, in Astoria, Queens, NY. He was raised in Marakibo, Venezuela and Great Neck, NY, and attended Saint Mary???s High School in Manhasset, NY, where he graduated second in his class behind his twin brother, Phillip Edward McCarthy. Paul received a full scholarship to Cornell Uneersity aneearned his Bachelors of Science degree ineechanical Engineering in 1960. Far above Cayuga???s waters, this athletic, quick-witted, keenly intelligent, and intensely disciplined young man was not only #14 on Cornell???s competitive lacrosse team but also the Social Chairmen of his beloved Chi Psi fraternity and President of the esteemed Atmos (Fessors) Honorary Society of Mechanical Engineering. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree he served as a First Lieutenant in the Field Artillery branch of the Uneed States Army. On August 25, 1962, Paul married his beloved, Janet Louise (Glaesel) McCarthy. He theneeturned to Cornell Uneersity and completed his Masters degree in Business Administration in 1965. He launeed his career in the capital equipment division of a publicly held company, and then joined privately held Schneider National, Inc., the world???s largest truckload carrier and logistics firm, in 1979. After a successful 23 years with Schneider, including being a positive influence on the company???s corporate culture and a mentor to many youneexecutives, Paul retired from Schneider oneecember 31, 2002, as their Corporate Vice President of Linehaul Services. After retirement he went on to serve as a respected board member for Imperial Supply (Green Bay, WI) and PeopleNet (Minneapolis, MN). Ineetirement, Janet and Paul reveled in travel, not only abroad but also in exploring almost all of our nation???s national parks. A gifted athlete during his lifetime, Paul was a talented lacrosse, baseball, and basketball player, and an avid swimmer, tennis player, cross-country skier, hiker, and golfer. He was an founding member of Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, NC, aneenerous supporter of Cornell Lacrosse, an instrumental donor to Family Services in Green Bay, WI, and a member of the Transportationeesearch Board Committee, providing independent advice to the National Research Council on scientific and technical matters. Paul is preceded ineeath by his daughter, Jenneer Anne McCarthy, his brother, Brian McCarthy, and his sister-in-law, Eleanor (Phillip) McCarthy. He is survived by his wife, Janet Louise McCarthy; daughters Carrie Louise McCarthy aneelizabeth Janet McCarthy; brother Phillip (Eleanor) McCarthy; brother-in-law Walter (Joan) Lockland; sister-in-law Arlene McCarthy; nee nieces and nephews and their spouses; and 18 beautiful grandnieces and graneephews. His smile, laugh, love, and loyalty will live forever in their hearts. A visitation and memorial mass will be held on Monday, August 18, from 1:00???3:00pm, at Newman Catholic Student Parish (Newman Club) at UNC-Chapel Hill, 218 Pittsboro St, Chapel Hill, NC, 27516.
