Thomas Howard Cordle

Thomas Howard Cordle of Durham died Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Duke Uneersity Hospital. He was 90 years old. Mr. Cordle was born in Atlanta, GA to the late Howard and Nelle R. Cordle on July 15, 1918. He served in the US Navy ineest Africa during World War II. He received a BA from Uneersity of Virginia, followed by an MA and PhD from Yale Uneersity. He was Professor Emeritus in French at Duke Uneersity where he taught from 1950 until 1983, specializing in contemporary literature. In 1955-56 he studied in Basel, Switzerland as a Fellow of the Fund for Advancement of Education. His publications include scholarly articles on Proust and Malraux, as well as two editions of a book on the life and work of Anee Gide. Mr. Cordle is survived by his nephews: Stewart Denslow of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Ted Denslow of Haneer, VA; and his niece, Marioneenslow of Spring Valley, NY. He was preceded ineeath by his loving wife, Ethel B. Cordle.
