Oxford, NC
Sunday
he worked hard, played hard, and lived every day to the fullest.
Dale Lee Matthews, of Oxford, North Carolina, passed away suddenly on September 30, 2026, in Durham at the age of 58. He was born on March 6, 1968, in Oxford, NC, and lived in a way that reflected the spirit of the words so often used to describe him: he worked hard, played hard, and lived every day to the fullest. He was always happy, loved life, and was forever ready for the next adventure.
Dale built his career in water and wastewater management and testing, bringing dedication and skill to work he took seriously. A high school graduate, he also earned and maintained numerous certifications through hard work and determination, a reflection of the pride he took in doing things well. He was known as someone who gave his all, whether on the job or in the moments that made life meaningful.
Outside of work, Dale embraced the things he loved with unmistakable enthusiasm. He loved traveling and was especially at home in the joy of lake adventures and the company of his lake family. He was skilled at playing pool and enjoyed listening to music loud, especially country and classic rock. Those who knew him will remember a man who never met a stranger, who loved to help anyone and everyone, and whose presence brought energy, warmth, and an easy sense of welcome. To many, he was affectionately known as “The Man, the Myth, The Legend.”
At the center of Dale’s life was love. He adored his wife, Nancy N. Mathews, and theirs was a marriage that spanned 39 years, a deeper love story rooted in a lifetime of devotion as soulmates since kindergarten. That enduring connection was one of the great joys of his life.
he was affectionately known as 'The Man, the Myth, The Legend.'
He is survived by Nancy; by his son, Andy Mathews, and daughter-in-law, Erica Mathews; by his grandsons, Caleb Jeffreys, Parker Mathews, and Duncan Mathews; and by his mother, Ila Mae Adcock Mathews. He also leaves behind many who cherished his friendship, his generosity, his laughter, and his deep love for life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Lee Mathews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 11, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Lake Devin, Lake Devin Rd, Oxford, NC 27565.
Dale’s life was full of motion, music, love, and adventure. He leaves behind memories of loud songs, openhearted kindness, shared travels, games of pool, and days by the lake. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
