Deborah Carol Smith

Deborah Carol Smith, affectionately known as Debbie to many who held her close, peacefully passed away on August 7, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on January 16, 1963, in Oxford, NC, she lived a life marked by warmth, humor, and an unwavering devotion to family and the simple pleasures that gave her days such meaning.

Daughter of the late Harold Clayton, Jr. and Peggy Jackson Clayton, Deborah grew up in a home filled with love—roots she nurtured and extended throughout her own life. The bonds of family were central to Deborah, and she nurtured them with steadfast kindness and gentle wisdom. She fiercely loved her daughters, Crystal Rose and Holly Boyd, but anyone who knew her would agree—her heart stretched even wider for her cherished grandchildren and, as she often joked, her “grand furbabies,” included but not limited too Rocky, Blue, Star and Angel.

Deborah’s home was often scented with the promise of something sweet from the oven. She was renowned among family and friends for her unforgettable peach cobbler and banana pudding. Cooking dessert was more than a pastime; it was her way of gathering those she loved around the table and making memories that lingered long after the plates were cleared. Her love for food stood in delightful contrast to her taste for simplicity—except, of course, when it came to those special occasions that called for an extra touch of flavor and joy.

A lover of beautiful things, Deborah’s favorite color was burgundy, and her admiration for the cardinal—a bird of deep symbolic meaning—was well known to all. She was happiest sitting quietly on the porch with her coffee, savoring a cigarette, and watching the day unfold. Weekends at the beach brought a sparkle to her eye; few delights compared to scratching a fresh lottery ticket with the ocean breeze brushing past. And ever the playful spirit, she could regularly be found gathered around the table, playing cards and sharing laughter with her grandchildren.

Those fortunate enough to spend time with Deborah will remember her soft strength and gentle humor. She pampered herself with little luxuries—getting her nails done, treating herself when she could—as reminders that self-care and joy were as important as any sacrifice she made for others. These small rituals became a testament to how she chose to live: with gratitude, authenticity, and the courage to relish small pleasures.

Deborah is survived by her loving daughters, Crystal Rose and Holly Boyd; her esteemed sons-in-law, Shawn Rose and Justin Boyd; her adoring grandchildren: Zaida Holden, De’Caida Holden, Jaxon Boyd, Julian Boyd, and Jason Boyd. She also leaves behind her brother, Harold Clayton, III, and sister-in-law, Judy Clayton, and extended family and friends too numerous to name, sharing generations of stories and comfort. Though predeceased by her parents, the legacy of the Clayton family lives on in each soul she nurtured.

The world feels a bit quieter in Deborah’s absence. Yet, her spirit endures in every game played around the kitchen table, each bite of homemade dessert, every cardinal perched beneath Carolina skies, and in the arms of the family she held so dear. She taught us to cherish simplicity, love each other deeply, and find beauty every day. Her memory will be treasured and her love, truly, never ever forgotten.
