Doris Dickerson Blackwell, known for her kindness, dedication and warmth, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at Brantwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oxford, North Carolina. Born on January 7, 1930, Doris's life was a testament to devotion to family, friends and work, that touched all who knew her.
Doris attended Hester Baptist Church. Her career was marked by steadfast commitment, notably at the radio station in Oxford and most significantly as a bookkeeper, a profession in which she excelled and took great pride. Her dedication to her work was profound, embodying a level of care and precision that reflected her character - kind, dependable and unwavering.
Those closest to Doris remember her as a welcoming presence and as someone who never met a stranger. She had a gift of warmth and kindness, always ready to extend a helping hand or a comforting word. Her love extended widely, from her devoted following of UNC sports to her love for her cats, Rabbitt and Tory. She enjoyed visits to the beach and spending time with family and friends.
Her family was the center of her life. Doris is survived by her beloved daughter, Tonya C. Burnette, and son-in-law, Michael, who carry forward her legacy of love and strength. Doris was predeceased by her parents, James Claudy Dickerson and Elsie Morris Dickerson, and her brothers, Younger Blanton "Dick" Dickerson (Betty) and James Claudy Dickerson, Jr.
In celebrating her life, those who knew Doris hold close the memories of her kindness and her steadfast heart. She will be remembered not only for the love she gave so freely but for the gentle strength with which she lived.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to Granville County Animal Shelter. Donations can be brought to the shelter location at 515 New Commerce Drive in Oxford.
