Dorothy Elise Wheeless (née Gelzer), cherished mother, devoted grandmother, beloved sister, and treasured friend, departed this life suddenly and unexpectedly on July 22, 2026, in North Carolina. Born on July 31, 1938, in New York, Dorothy’s remarkable journey of eighty-seven years was marked by an uncommon grace, a profound devotion to others, and an enduring zest for both learning and art.

From her earliest days, Dorothy exuded an elegance and kindness that left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her. In every stage of her life, she demonstrated a unique beauty—one not merely seen, but deeply felt by all whom she encountered.

Dorothy’s intellectual gifts and compassionate spirit led her to a lifelong vocation as a child psychologist. With a master’s degree from John Hopkins, she dedicated her entire career to the service of children and families at Sheppard Pratt Hospital and the Forbush School in Sheppard Pratt. Her unwavering commitment touched countless lives, and it was a testament to her passion that she continued her work until the age of eighty-six, retiring only in February of 2025. Her storied career remains among her proudest achievements, and her legacy endures through the lives she changed for the better.

Education and excellence, however, were only facets of a multi-dimensional woman. Dorothy was an avid ballet dancer whose love of movement and music infused her existence with joy. She took ballet classes into her seventies, and with admirable tenacity and delight, she could perform a full split up to the age of eighty-five. Her poise, both in the dance studio and in the world, was rivaled only by her warmth and open-heartedness.

Family was the cornerstone of Dorothy’s life. She raised her children in Baltimore, Maryland, where house and heart alike radiated with love, support, and thoughtful guidance. Her devotion to her family was complete; they recall her not only as a mother and grandmother but as a steadfast source of encouragement and wisdom. To have been loved by Dorothy was to have known tenderness, understanding, and sincerity.

Dorothy’s heart found a new home when she moved to North Carolina, settling in her beloved Dexter community—the “little slice of heaven” where she embraced tranquility and the beauty of nature in her later years.

She is dearly survived by her son, Clifford “Bob” Wheeless, III (Carol); her daughter, Elise Kiely (Neil); her sister, Jane Menendez; and four adoring grandchildren: Luke Wheeless, John Wheeless, Hannah Elise Kiely, and Francis “Ike” Kiely. Dorothy’s love and nurturing spirit will forever remain in their memories and deeds.

She now joins her cherished husband, Clifford Wheeless, Jr; her father, John Franklin Gelzer; and her mother, Dorothy Gelzer, whose spirits surely rejoice at her arrival.

Elegant, kind, and classy, Dorothy Elise Wheeless leaves behind an indelible mark upon all who knew her—a shining example of grace, compassion, and beauty in every sense.

A Celebration of Life honoring Dorothy will take place at a later date. All who knew and loved her are welcome to gather in remembrance of a life lived with generosity, joy, and dignity.

Dorothy’s memory, luminous and enduring, will be treasured always.
