Ella Jean Evans

Ella Jean Averett Evans, 88, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at her home. She was born January 30, 1938, to the late William Crosby Averett and Ella Margaret Parker Averett in Granville County, NC, where she remained deeply connected throughout her life.

Mrs. Evans will be remembered for her simple and kind nature and for the love she showed to others through cooking. Those who knew her experienced a warm presence and a caring spirit that found expression in everyday acts of devotion and hospitality.

Ella Jean was employed by Macra Lace for many years and also worked alongside her husband on the family poultry farm. She was a charter member of New Horizons Baptist Church for 24 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Carter Evans, Jr.; her sister, Lula Mangum (Julian); and her nephew, Dale Mangum.

She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory always: her daughters, Maria Ford (Cam); Debra Gay Martin (Jim); and her son, Daryl Evans (Aimee). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dustin Evans (Courtney), Cameron Breedlove (Trevor), Dana Brannock (Lee), and Chase Perry. Her legacy also lives on in her great-grandchildren, Bradlee Evans, Carter Evans, Blakely Evans, Emersyn Breedlove, Charlotte Breedlove, Behr Brannock, and Addie Brannock.

She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members too numerous to name.

The family would like to wish a heartfelt thank you to her caregivers, Lakotah, Jane, Jessica, Duke Hospice, and Duke Hospice nurses.

A funeral service will be held on August 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at New Horizons Baptist Church, 3490 Sterl Carrington Road, Oxford, North Carolina 27565. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Meadowview Memorial Park, 6165 U.S. 15, Oxford, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests the memorial contributions be made to New Horizons Baptist Church or Duke Hospice of Durham.

Ella Jean Evans will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew her. Her life was marked by kindness, devotion to her family, and the quiet gifts she shared so generously with others.
