George E. Summers, III

July 12, 1939 — April 30, 2026

Oxford, NC

George E. Summers, III, a man whose life was a tapestry woven with dedication, loyalty, and a remarkable breadth of experience, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, in Oxford, North Carolina. Born on July 12, 1939, in Jacksonville, Florida, George's early years were marked by a peripatetic childhood shaped by the distinguished military career of his father. This unique upbringing led him to attend a remarkable twenty-five different schools from first through twelfth grade, spanning continents and cultures—from Japan and Turkey to the Philippines and China—endowing him with a worldly perspective and resilience that would define his character.

A proud alumnus of Anne Arundel Community College, George later served his country honorably as a Radio Repairman in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960, during which he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, a testament to his steadfast commitment and exemplary service.

Upon completing his military tenure, George embarked on a distinguished civilian career culminating as the Materials Management Director at Granville Medical Center, from which he retired with the respect and admiration of colleagues and community alike.

On July 13, 1966, George joined in matrimony with his beloved wife, Barbara Campbell Summers, a union that blossomed into six decades of shared life, love, and partnership. Together, they nurtured a family rich in warmth and accomplishment: their daughter, Kimberly Jones (TJ) of Cary, North Carolina, and their son, Michael Summers of Wilson. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren—Kristen Allen (Zach) of Cary; and grandsons David, Thomas, and Eli Summers of Clayton—who bore witness to his craftsmanship and gentle spirit through his woodworking pursuits. George’s skillful hands fashioned furniture, rocking chairs, cribs, jewelry chests, and wine racks, tokens of love and creativity that remain treasured heirlooms.

George's sense of service extended beyond family and profession into an active civic and fraternal life. As a Master Mason and Past Master of Oxford Masonic Lodge No. 122 AF & AM, he was known for his wisdom and mentorship. He served diligently as Past Deputy District Grand Lecturer, Certified Lecturer, and Certified Coach, guiding a generation of Masons on their journey to Master Mason. From 2016 to 2024, he fulfilled the role of Marshall of Oxford Lodge 122 with unwavering dedication. His proud accomplishments also include devoted leadership with the JF Webb Football Chains unit, a decade of service as a Girl Scout Leader in Maryland, board membership for Boy Scout Troop 637, and many years as a coach, umpire, and referee for the Greater Glen Burnie Junior Sports League, reflecting a lifelong passion for community and youth development.

George’s journey through life was further enriched by the presence of special friends Dale and Elaine Francke of Stuart, Florida, whose companionship meant much to him. He is also survived by his brothers Winkle Van Summers of Gainesville and Alan Grable Summers of Keystone Heights, who, alongside Barbara, Kimberly, Michael, and his grandchildren, carry forward his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. Summers, Jr. and Janie Campbell Summers, and his brother Joe Clarence Summers.

A visitation to honor George’s remarkable life will be held on May 12, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Oxford United Methodist Church, located at 105 West McClanahan Street, Oxford, North Carolina.
