Franklinton, NC

Franklinton, NC. Jo Ann DeShane, 77, formerly of Sherrill, NY, passed peacefully at home on Wednesday June 4, 2025 after a lengthy decline in health. She was born December 30, 1947 in Potsdam, NY to William J. and Mary Emma Hall Brouse.

She grew up in Norwood, NY graduating from Norwood-Norfolk Central School as a member of the class of 1965. Jo Ann later earned her BA in English Literature from Potsdam State University in 1969. Her passion for wanting to help those with needs, and to include and treat everyone equally, shaped her life. She retired from Madison-Oneida BOCES as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant in 2006.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, those who knew Jo Ann will remember her as a most kind, caring, loving soul. Her smile, laughter, and love of life was infectious. Being around her gave one a true sense of hope and happiness. She enjoyed being with friends, camping, traveling, painting and reading. She would often say that a book is like a vacation, it can take you anywhere you choose.

A life long Methodist in faith, Jo Ann was a current member of Oxford United Methodist Church.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jerry. Two sons, Aaron (Sarah) and Christopher, both of Franklinton NC; two sisters Martha (Alan) Devernoe of Sarasota FL; Judith Brouse of Fonda, NY; and a brother William (Linda) Brouse of Martinez GA, along with several nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her three grandchildren Julian, Catherine, and Everett, who brought incredible joy into her life. Jo Ann so loved to be around them, whether it was baking cookies or doing crafts, she never missed an opportunity. In her life, the words she most cherished were “Mom” and “Nana”.

Jo Ann was predeceased by her parents, a brother James, and her special worldwide traveling companion Aunt Betty.

In addition to her family, Jo Ann leaves behind: her Class of 1965 “Forever Friends”; her best friend in life Joyce, and the rest of her Malarky sisters.

The family would like to thank Medi Home Health & Hospice for their caring and support during Jo Ann’s illness.

A very special “Thank You” to her caregivers, Larecia, Tracy and, Krystal who over the past year have allowed Jo Ann to remain at home and added comfort and dignity to her life.
