Obituary

Leslie Hall Johnson, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2026, leaving behind a rich legacy of music, art, and profound love for her family and community.

Born on November 17, 1934, in Oxford, North Carolina, to Samuel Cannady Hall and Mary Powell Hall, she was blessed with a rare talent for art and music. Her family encouraged her to cultivate her talents from a young age, and she went on to graduate with a music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Leslie saw beauty in the world and shared her gifts freely. Her creativity extended far beyond the canvas into her everyday life, making every gathering more fun and memorable.

A lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Oxford, NC, Leslie’s faith and talents were deeply intertwined with her community. Her musical abilities touched countless lives; she shared her passion by teaching piano to generations of children in Oxford, filling her church with beauty as the organist, and for years brought energy and joy to the stage as a pianist for the local community theater.

Her creativity knew no bounds. She was a deeply talented artist and artisan who could master any craft that caught her eye. After watching a demonstration on straw basket weaving, she simply decided she could do it, too—and was soon crafting beautiful, intricate baskets with her loving husband, Preston.

Her hands were rarely still, and her generous heart drove her to use her skills for others. She spent hours knitting cozy caps for premature babies in the Duke NICU and creating the most adorable knitted stuffed animals, bringing comfort to those who needed it most. Beyond her artistic talents, Leslie was delightfully fun, spirited, and supportive. She loved gathering around the table for card games and was famously competitive when it came to Rummikub. Her sharp mind, warm wit, and encouraging nature made her a pillar of strength and a joy to be around.

Leslie’s greatest masterpiece, however, was the beautiful family she nurtured and adored. She is survived by her devoted husband, Preston Johnson; her son, Bill (Leslie) Paynter; her daughter, Laura (Bill) Ward; her stepdaughters, Christie (Korey) Hatch; and DeAnne (Rick) Talley. She was the fiercely proud grandmother of Sam and John Paynter; Will, Sarah, and Jeb Ward; Ethan and Trevor Hatch; and David, Trent, and Tabatha Talley, in addition to her beloved great-granddaughter, Malia Ward, and great-grandson Grey Ward.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, beautiful music, exquisite paintings, and cherished memories. Leslie touched a multitude of lives with her kindness, grace, and boundless capability. She was deeply loved and adored by her family and friends, and her family will forever miss her bright light, her creative spark, and the joy she brought into their lives, though her melody will play on in the hearts of all who knew her.
