Margaret Burwell, a cherished member of the Oxford community and a loving family matriarch, peacefully departed this world on June 12, 2025, in Henderson, NC. Born on July 25, 1932, in Oxford, her life was a testament to strength, faith, and an unwavering devotion to both her family and community.
Margaret's professional journey was marked by her dedicated service to the State Government in Administration at John Umstead, where her remarkable work ethic and nurturing spirit left a lasting impact. As a proud member of the West Oxford Baptist Church, her beautiful voice resonated through the congregation as she sang solos and participated joyfully in the choir. Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life, guiding her through moments of joy and adversity alike.
Following the untimely passing of her husband, Joe Burwell, Jr., Margaret demonstrated remarkable resilience as she raised her two beloved children on her own. She instilled in them the values of hard work and compassion, virtues she lived by each day. Her legacy endures through her son, Joe T. Burwell, III (Debra Ann Groom), and her cherished grandsons, Michael T. Wester and Andrew C. Wester (Grace), who adored her deeply.
Margaret’s love touched many far beyond her immediate family. She is also survived by her brother, Tim Dean (Pam); her niece, Chrissy Gresham; her nephews, Dale Dean, Gene, Jerry, and Mike Moye, as well as the Burwell nieces, nephews and cousins and family and friends too numerous to name, whose lives were enriched by her kindness and wisdom. Though she may have passed from this earth, her loving spirit and the lessons she shared will forever remain alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
Preceded in death by her parents, Cuther Dean and Cora Lee Simmons Dean; her daughter, Cora Burwell Wester; and her sister, Virginia Moye, Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will continue to inspire those who carry her memory.
A visitation to honor Margaret will be held on June 20, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford, NC. A graveside service will follow on June 21, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford, where she will rest peacefully. Flowers are welcomed, or memorial contributions may be made to West Oxford Baptist Church in her name.
In this time of sorrow, let us reflect on the abundant memories she created and the vast number of lives she touched. Margaret Burwell will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
