Patricia Ann “Patsy” Matthews, born December 30, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2025. Throughout her 83 years, Patsy graced the world with her unmistakable blend of love, humor, and feistiness.
A devoted mother, sister, and Nannie, Patsy’s heart was anchored in her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and loved ones. Her passions were many—traveling, playing bingo, enjoying watching Duke basketball and Nascar racing. A free spirit at heart, she embraced life with curiosity and was never afraid to pack up and explore new places.
Patsy had a remarkable presence; she lit up every room she entered and never shied away from speaking her mind or standing firm in her beliefs. Those who knew her will remember her laughter, her spark, and the strength she carried so naturally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Violet and Phillip McNamee; her husband, Robert Lee Matthews; her siblings, Phillip McNamee, Linda Edwards, and Betty Overby; her son, William “Larry” Matthews; and her son-in-law, G.W. McAlpin.
Patsy is survived by her sister, Phyllis Spears; her seven remaining children, Sheryl McAlpin, Wanda Tysinger (Marshall), Phillip “Lee” Matthews (Linda), Michael “Mike” Matthews (Elizabeth), Richard “Ricky” Matthews Sr. (Christy), Thomas “Dale” Matthews (Tammie), and Melissa Matthews. She also leaves behind a legacy of love carried on by 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her pallbearers will be the following special people to carry her place of rest,Corry Robinson, Dylan Cottrell, Ray Matthews, Christopher Easter, Justin Linke, Michael Asycue, and Gary Williams.
Though her absence leaves a deep void, her family takes comfort in knowing that Patsy’s fearless spirit and unforgettable joy left a beautiful and lasting mark on the world. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who loved her.
